Wong Chai Kee Chicken Rice, Setapak E-mail

We had heard about this chicken rice place in Setapak, called Wong Chai Kee, before Chinese New Year and had wanted to try it out for some time. But the place had been closed for a month for the Chinese New Year holidays. That's how good their business is that they can afford to take a whole month off and them some. Setapak may mean "One Step Away" but it would take us at least half an hour to drive there even if traffic was relatively light.

chicken riceFinally, one Sunday night in May, we had confirmation that they were open again and we made our way down to Setapak. Drive along Jalan Pahang until you reach the Air Panas traffic light. Turn into Jalan Air Panas (53300 KL) and drive for another 2 or 3 minutes. Keep a lookout on the right and you'll see a road side stall selling chicken rice with a few tables in an open air setting just before the big drain. It's the only one there so you can't miss it.

We arrived there at just about 8 pm and they just had enough chicken left to serve our party of five. There was no chicken innards left which was a real bummer but it really shows you good their business is. The store only opens at night from 5 pm - 8:30 pm (closed on Mondays).

They only serve steamed chicken so set your expectations right. I am usually not a fan of steamed chicken but the steamed chicken is really good. The meat is very smooth and not overly fat. My children loved it too because it was easy to chew unlike some chicken which is a bit on the hard side.

They also serve a mean chicken porridge as well. The porridge is boiled over a coal fire and it's really thick & gooey, just the way I like it.

All in the bill came up to RM35.50 for 5 of us.

The propritetor, Ah Heong, gave me his number to call so that I could check with him whether he's open or not or perhaps even make reservations. 016-6060695.
