Hokkien Char, off Jalan 222 E-mail

If you are looking for good chinese hawker food in PJ at night and want to venture away from SS2 or SEA Park, there is a short strech of shops on Jalan 14/48 (this is just off Jalan 222, PJ), you'll find two coffee shops at the opposite end of the block that serves pretty good food. Let's take a look at the first, Restoran Ahwa which is just behind the Shell petrol kiosk (or gas station) on Jalan 222.

Many people come for their Hokkien Char, which is probably one of the best in PJ. They have two cooks who are constantly churning out dishes and the place is often full during dinner hours of 7:30 pm to 9 pm. Parking can get quite difficult sometimes. The hokkien char is very nicely fried as the they manage to fry it with an even consistency to make sure all the noodles have coated with the sauce and the perfect taste is in every bit of noodle that you bite into. What I like about it was that the lard is so fine that you can't really see it but you definitely can bite into it. Awesome!

But one of the things I have learnt from repeated visits here is that you have to keep the serving size to not more than 3, otherwise the cooks don't know how to scale properly. And If you are going to takeaway, don't take too long to eat it as it will dry up if not eaten within half an hour. Best is to eat it there.

The kung fu chau (cantonese fried noodle) is also excellent. Again the lard made all the difference and my daughter finished a plate all by herself. The fried oyster at Ahwa is not too bad good. It's a different style of fried oyster as he does not use starch. So if you like your oyster with eggs, this is the place to have it. Try it.

The other thing that's quite popular here is their stewed duck rice. I didn't try it but lots of people seemed to be having it.

On to Ah Fatt. While not as packed as Ahwa, it still has it's good stuff. The Hokkien Char is not bad but a bit strange - it has fish cake but also has lard. Like Ahwa, the lard is diced so small that you can't see it but you can still certainly bite into it. While the hokkien char tasted good, the fish cake kind of spoilt it for me. I could have just chosen not to eat it, you say, but it was there so I had to eat it. RM9 for a serving for 2.

But the winner at Ah Fatt is the Fried Oyster. This is one of the few places that serves the fried oyster on a banana leaf. The oysters are big and has a nice blend of starch & egg. There is not too much starch that it overpowers the egg. I would have liked more coriander though. But it is not cheap though. A serving for one person is RM6. But do try it, I think it's the best fried oysters in PJ.
