People used to rave about how good Madam Kwan's nasi lemak is. While I have had it before, I couldn't remember it as excellent or to die for. But to be fair, I felt I had to try it again just to give it a more current assessment.
I went to the outlet in Mid Valley, the latest addition to their stable of restaurants. The other two being their original store in Bangsar Baru and KLCC.
There have been complaints that service is rather poor but I am happy to report that it didn't take them long to take my food order. But it did take repeated requests (5 times) to get a glass of water. Perhaps water is a low value item, so that's why they could not get it right. Maybe it's even part of their SOP to get people to order a juice or something more expensive? I don't know.
The nasi lemak came pretty quickly too. Arrived before the water - I only got my water after I had almost completed my meal.
The rice was fragrant but a tad bit too soggy. There were no peanuts and ikan bilis on it. The sambal was so so. The curry chicken while very savoury and "lemak" is not my idea of a perfect accompaniment to nasi lemak, though I am sure that's why some people love the nasi lemak here.
In the end - my previous assessment was reinforced. It's good nasi lemak - not great. And at RM13.30 for a plate, it's not really value for money in my books but of course I must remember that I am paying for the ambience, the air conditioning, the comfort and the choice ingredients that Madam Kwan is probably using.
