Prawn Mee, Jalan Penchala - Petaling Jaya |

At the end of Jalan Pechala in Petaling Jaya are tow shacks housing some hawker stalls. One of the stalls there sells Prawn Mee (otherwise known as Hokkien Mee among Penangites) and Curry Mee. The stall has been there for 30 years and the sellers are in to the second generation and I think I see the third generation helping out now as well. This is street food at its best.
Jalan Penchala is one the roads that borders one of the Petaling Jaya Industrial Zones and it's not a place that most people will associate with good food. I found it by accident several years back. As I was sending my car to that area for service, I passed this shack which seemed to be packed with diners. Now that's a good maxim to go by - if the place is hot and by the road side but still attracts lots of people, there's something good there.
The prawn mee here has one of the better prawn soups in Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur. With prawn mee as with most soupy noodles, the soup is really the single most important factor in the dish. However the soup has MSG in it though not overly much. The noodles is hard to distinguish as everyone uses the same type of noodles. The other stuff that they put in are pretty standard - sliced shrimps, slices of pork, fried onions, vegetables.
If you are the type that loves Prawn Mee with pork ribs, then this is not the place for you. They don't serve it that way.
A small bowl is RM3.00 and a large bowl is RM3.50 which makes this place one of the cheaper places to eat in Petaling Jaya. Drinks here range from RM0.80 to RM1.00 which is also a good price.
