Old Town Kopitiam is yet another chain of nouveau kopitiam which have
been given the upgraded treatment so that they can charge you several
ringgit for a cup of coffee that you could pay RM1 for in a normal
kopitiam. Hmm, that may be too cynical - after all, so many now have no
qualms putting out RM7 for a cup of coffee at Starbucks or Coffee Bean.
What's more important is really the quality.
Old Town Kopitiam is the home of the original white coffee where in
1958, they devised a method of roasting a blend of arabica and robusta
coffee beans with some beet sugar to create the famous Ipoh white
coffee. Some people swear by this coffee, saying it's he best cup of
coffee you will get - but for me I prefer my flat white. Each cup of
Ipoh White Coffee is RM2.20.
Food here is not too bad. The Nasi Lemak (RM5.80) was actually quite good. The rice was firm and fragrant. Served on top of a brown paper, it comes with a piece of curry chicken and papadam along with the usual sambal, egg, ikan bilis and nuts. The curry noodles (RM5.80) was also not bad at all. The soup had enough coconut milk in it making it very lemak. I think it's better than Uncle Lim's.
All in, dining here is pretty good value for money especially at One Utama. A meal for two for under RM20. Old Town Kopitiam has a chain of over 20 restaurants throughout Malaysia.
