Nyonya food has always been popular and while it seemed to have been overshadowed by the raft of Hong Kong eateries, mamak stores, vietnamese restaurants - of late it seems to have made a comeback together with the kopitiams.
We arrived at the Melaka Street Restaurant in SS 2 at 7:45 pm and the place was soon filled up and there was soon a crowd standing outside waiting to get in. They had 4 waiters on duty and they were hard pressed to attend to everyone. My wife had to get a baby chair herself and we had to wait about 10 minutes before someone came to take our order.
Air con was cold though so that kept me cool. But most of the bad feeling was forgotten once the food came.
The fried chicken boxing (RM13) was done with chicken drumlets and it was tasty to the bone. The tastiness can be attributed to the fermented bean curd that the drumlet was fried with.
The Hong Kong Kai Lan (RM13) was not as good as the friec chicken but it was ok. The Claypot Japanese Bean Curd (RM11) was a bit charred so it was a bit off. While the Claypot Butter Prawns (RM19) had an excellent sauce, the prawns were not entirely fresh. Maybe I should remember not to eat prawns on a Sunday.
The Nasi Lemak (RM7) was served a bit on the cold side but my daughter loved it. The curry
chicken was quite lemak but she liked it because it was not too spicy.
The sambal was ok but a bit on the sweet side. The ikan bilis however
was good.
The Cendol was not good because the cendol was frozen, the coconut milk not lemak enough. There was inconsistency in the ais kacang. One was good because the santan was creamy enough. The other was off.
Overall not too bad a place if you know what to order.
